The animated universe of Tron depicts the fantastic interior world of a computer system contemporary to the early 1980s era of the film’s release. Some of the assumptions which constitute the film’s look and feel:
artificial intelligence
virtual reality
teleportation
translation of atoms to bits
computer system with many separate programs
computer voice synthesis
text to speech interface
touch screen interface
computer is 2415 times faster than human
terminal results from videogame play
Next year’s Tron sequel looks like it may take the original film’s aesthetics to another dimension with a fully digital process:

terminal results from videogame play:
in the movie a program can destroy each other. In this example your gameplay affects your private files on your harddrive.

A new brain-computer-interface technology could turn our brains into automatic image-identifying machines that operate faster than human consciousness.
Researchers at Columbia University are combining the processing power of the human brain with computer vision to develop a novel device that will allow people to search through images ten times faster than they can on their own.

Durch das Head-Mounted Display wird eine Art Virtueller Raum direkt vor den Augen geschaffen, dies könnte in Zukunft den Bildschirm ersetzen und die Bearbeitung zum Beispiel von sehr großem Videomaterial erleichtern.

1:46 pmI wanna talk about the “virtual reality”…. The look and feel in the movie “Tron” was remembering me of a PSX1 game called Metal Gear Solid VR Missions. I think the developer of the game took the movie “Tron” as inspiration for creating the game look from that add-on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQQ73F7vb0Q

here is an advanced example of text to speech functionality. You type the text into the box and a computer synthesised voice is reading it for you.

Comment by nino 11.09.09 @ 5:43 pmTranslation of atoms to bits:
There is a technology called 3D scanning. A 3D scanner is a device that analyzes a real-world object or environment to collect data on its shape and possibly its appearance. The collected data can then be used to construct digital, three dimensional models useful for a wide variety of applications.
In my opinion this is a form of translating atoms to bits. Maybe in the future it is also possible to digitize people like in Tron.

Sounds impossible:

Comment by Josip 11.16.09 @ 10:45 amThough I’m not that much into fashion, besides all the technical stuff, what really caught my eye in TRON were the outfits inside the MCP.
Fashiondesigner Louise Goldin created 80’s- and TRON-inspired clothes for last year’s fall season. Pretty interesting.
I still miss the lights and glowing on the clothes, maybe fall 2010?
