Andrei Tarkovsky’s “Solaris”

Solaris is a meditation on humanity and its attempt to connect with the cosmic. Particularly haunting is the notion of our inability to establish contact with other worlds because of our desire to see ourselves reflected.

Some of the characteristic visual decisions include filming paintings as symbols for earthly nostalgia;

… as well as constructing a space station which is in disrepair …

… Akasaka, Tokyo is used as a setting for scenes depicting the city of the future …

Akasaka,_Tokyo

As much a psychological thriller as a science fiction film, Solaris builds its story world on fantastic assumptions depicted in a starkly realistic manner;

interstellar travel
space stations on other planets
disembodied alien intelligence

space stations

Not on other planets (yet), but a place to “live” besides earth is currently the “International Space Station” (ISS). Yet living on such a station is of limited duration.
The mission of the International Space Station is “to enable long-term exploration of space and provide benefits to people on Earth.”

Also: a quite interesting article about the technical progress (that seems not to be sophisticated enough yet) of making it possible for humans to stay in space for a longer period of time. “Are We Ready to Live on Other Planets?”

Could humans be the only intelligent beings in all the vastness of the universe? Or are we just one humble race, a member of a vast intergalactic fraternity of advanced civilizations? SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is the scientific quest to answer these great unknowns. As of now all we have are questions, but we know the answers, when they come, could transform our world. For the past 25 years, The Planetary Society has worked hard to make sure we never stop seeking these answers.(SETI)

The Lunar outpost will be an inhabited facility on the surface of the Moon which NASA currently proposes to construct over the five years between 2019 and 2024. The United States Congress has directed that the U.S. portion, “shall be designated the Neil A. Armstrong Lunar Outpost”.

One intelligent liquid we know today is the ferrofluid. A ferrofluid, is a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field.

Maybe in the future there will be these liquids. And maybe it will also be possible that they can influence people like in the film.

Life from dead subject. Scientists create a malaria medicine of sugar. They changed the genetic composition and created a bacterium.

The ocean seems to possess a consciousness in Solaris.

Transhumanism
is an international intellectual and cultural movement supporting the use of science and technology to improve human mental and physical characteristics and capacities. Their believers predict that human beings may eventually be able to transform themselves into beings with greatly expanded abilities – “POSTHUMANS”. The movement is therefore sometimes referred to as “posthumanism” or a transformational activism influenced by posthumanist ideal. Will Posthumans replace humans? Another form of aliens, but created by ourselfes.

This movement has been described by one critic, Francis Fukuyama, as the world’s most dangerous idea, while one proponent, Ronald Bailey, thinks that it is a “movement that epitomizes the most daring, courageous, imaginative, and idealistic aspirations of humanity”.
