Set in an indeterminate time at the beginning of the 22nd century, the story world of Alien relies on numerous technological assumptions, including:
commercial space travel
interstellar travel
suspended animation / cryonics
alien higher intelligence
industrial or hazardous space ships
android in collusion with corporation
valuing human life less than scientific advances

Freeze People is a usual technology in the film. A lot of scientists thinking this is absolutly possible. The experiments show great promise for the future.

I am interested to talk about the reason for using industrial or hazardous space ships. I think we should not go so for away in interpeting why most of the science-fiction horror movies are using that dark and cold industrial look for the movies. In my opinion the main reason is because it supports the scary dark horror mood to create more fear and mystery. One example for that is the new Sci-Fi Thriller “Pandorum”.

Comment by Mike Wenzel 10.12.09 @ 5:43 pmIn “Alien” people travel space with suspended animation. Back in the 70’s it still was a revolutenary thought but nowadays it actually is not that far away as we might think. The link is already four years old so who knows how much further scientists got with their research…

Comment by Sabine 10.12.09 @ 5:48 pmI WONDER HOW MUCH MONEY IT COSTS?
Suspended Animation’s stabilization procedures are applied only to patients who have made arrangements for subsequent cryopreservation at cryonics facilities. Suspended Animation itself does not provide cryogenic storage of any kind.

2005 hatte die NASA eine Bewilligung für Arbeit über Signalabfragung für die Allen-Teleskop-Reihe zugesprochen.
Dieses Institut existiert noch heute.

Comment by Nadine 10.12.09 @ 5:55 pmModern robots are able to run complex operations. They could replace humans in dangerous work surroundings. But cyborgs/robots are very expensive to produce AND to loose. Its much cheaper to let humans risk there lives than to replace them with expencive robots.
that could be an answer why in ‘alien’ the crew is mostly human. They could all be replaced by androids but that wouldn’t fit in a budget of a mining mission.

Comment by Sevgi & Marcos 10.12.09 @ 6:35 pmThere is a board-computer in “Alien” called “Mother”. Mother controls all the systems on the space shuttle. It automatically switches the lights on, wakes up the crew from their suspended animation, navigates the ship and so on.
Today there is also technique which can control our surroundings like for example our house. This process is called Home Automation.
So thats why I think that computers will participate more and more in our lifes in the future and maybe once we’ll have a “Mother” in our home, on which we depend on.

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gebäudeautomatisierung
One example for a future house is the T-Com House in Berlin.

Comment by Ulrike 10.12.09 @ 9:08 pmImagine there is somithing growing in your body! It seems to be a tumor, but it is nothing like that.
“As the doctor cut deeper into the stomach he watched something unnatural. “To my surprise and horror, I could shake hands with somebody inside,” he said. “It was a bit shocking for me.”
“Inside Bhagat’s stomach was a strange, half-formed creature that had feet and hands…”
His twin was living inside him.
To my mind this twin looks like an alien. The twin inside is like a parasit, he can’t live without his host.

But he pay 20 million dollars for 7 days, 22 hours and 4 minutes in space. I think that space traveling in the future must be very cheaper, so that evry one can travel and not only the richest people.

Comment by Josip 10.17.09 @ 2:43 pmThough I’m not a feminist, it’s interesting that Ridley Scott tries to establish a female hero in a science fiction/horror movie, which was not common at that time (and still isn’t, I guess).
There’s a whole sub-genre of science fiction, the “feminist science fiction” which deals with role models, social issues and gender roles in general.

Es gibt ja angeblich auch schon Parasiten im Hirn, die das Verhalten mitbestimmen. Nachgewiesen wurden die zwar erst bei Tieren, aber wer weiß … vllt sind wir ja auch schon befallen
