Filed under: The Future of Science Fiction
Set in 1999, The Matrix presents an alternate reality for the present, which — incidentally — is now 10 years in the past!
Kevin Kelly gives some insights into the future of the Internet and what he calls the “one machine”.
Here are the assumptions we’ve identified for the story-world of The Matrix:
machines depending on humans / humans depending on machines
machines / artificial intelligence (AI) rules the world
machine can simulate sensory stimulation (dominance of virtual reality)
the neural/silicon barrier has been broken
human being as source of electrical power
AI is hostile
AI has emotions
thin line between humans and AI
AI lacks intuition
human colonies under the surface of the earth
advanced hovercraft vehicles
sentient robotic lifeforms

second life: where people escape to a virtual reality. nowadays this seems to be the closest approach to the matrix with the difference of still beeing present in the real world (more or less)…

according to the implanted plugins of the leftover humans to enter the matrix today there are already attempts to combine the human body with technical advances.

Comment by Alex 10.19.09 @ 3:59 pmLiving in virtual reality
Virtual reality (VR) is a technology which allows a user to interact with a computer-simulated environment, whether that environment is a simulation of the real world or an imaginary world.
Second Life (SL) is a virtual world developed by Linden Lab that launched on June 23, 2003, and is accessible via the Internet.
Today many people are addicted to their virtual games and lifes, that they can not differentiate between reality and virtual world.
In my oppinion it is possible that in the future we will live in a virtual world like in the film.

Comment by Ulrike 10.19.09 @ 4:59 pmThe human as an energy source
In the film matrix the androids get their energy from the humans.
Now young scientists developed a technique that uses the energy from the human body heat. That’s an example for human energy sources and maybe in the future we can drive our cars only with the energy of our body. That would be great!

Comment by Nadine 10.19.09 @ 6:27 pmThe hoverships in the Matrix that rescues the humans is supported by anti-gravity generators. Until today, science has not found a solution and The Institute for Gravity Research of the Göde Scientific Foundation has even announced a one million Euro award:
>> The “Göde reward for gravity research” is an innovative prize. The intent of this prize is to influence gravity with presently unknown methods. Applicants must successfully design, construct and complete an experiment with specified performance characteristics. A 20 gram heavy device or the assembly itself, is required to float freely at least 1 minute at a minimum distance of 10 cm from any surface.<<

Here`s an example, where an insect is controlled by an computersystem. It`s limited to mechanical reactions but its an beginning.

Das seit 2003 verfügbare System hat 15 Millionen registrierte Benutzerkonten, über die rund um die Uhr meist rund 60.000 Nutzer gleichzeitig in das System eingeloggt sind.

Comment by Stephan Tillmans 11.02.09 @ 6:26 pmI was wondering if there are already some artificial robots that can do more than just move or walk and I found them! The first I found is a robot who is able to play the violin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzjkBwZtxp4
The nother example I found was also VERY interesting. It´s about a robot housekkeper who does all the duties that must done in the house like the dishes, hoovering and many more…

The last example is about a cooking robot!

Comment by RB 11.02.09 @ 6:42 pmVirtual Realities are already highly developed. You can touch things, move about in a room or listen in 3D. The only thing that can not yet be simulated is sensory stimulation. But who know’s how long that will take…

Comment by sabine 11.02.09 @ 6:46 pmZion is a hill outside the walls of Jerusalem. Still Zion often is used as a synecdoche for Jerusalem and the Land of Israel, Promised Land, distant but much wanted goal or even utopia.
In the Matrix Zion is a human-controlled underground city.
