Set in an alternate, dystopian present, Brazil brings together a number of assumptions to create the look and feel of its story world;

retro-futurism
police state control of civil society
enormous “papercratic” bureaucracy
automatic household appliances
ID scanning
megalopolis
robotic surveillance
cloning
extreme plastic surgery
electronic restaurant menus
molecular cuisine
mundane terrorism
renegade heating engineers

Retro-Futurism

An interesting current fashion trend, inspired by Brazil and its ilk, is steampunk, characterized by this modified personal computer:

And more about Steampunk..:
It seems to be about the community, about bringing people together who have an affection for another aesthetical view on modern technology, a contrast to cyberpunk. In Steampunk, a lot of people find an umbrella term for their loving the aesthetics of the victorian age and the wish to combine it with the modern technology of these days. Interesting. To me it’s really a form of art.

Molecular cuisine:

The food the people eat in the restaurant in the film, is very similar to space food, I think.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_food
http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/EHCN/SEM2H06Y3EE_0.html

Molecular gastronomy is a scientific discipline that studies the physical and chemical processes that that occur while cooking. Molecular gastronomy seeks to investigate and explain the chemical reasons behind the transformation of ingredients, as well as the social, artistic and technical components of culinary and gastronomic phenomena in general.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xp2l9mRqLo&feature=related

So, we can see that it’s possible to have this molecular food today. But I think people will always like to eat fresh food. The molecular food is a little bit scary, because you don’t really know the ingredients and it also looks very curious.

Two chefes, that are associated with “molecular cuisine” are Heston Blumenthal and Adrià Ferran. Blumenthals “is famous for his scientific approach and has been described as a culinary alchemist for his innovative style of cooking” while Adrià’s stated goal is to “provide unexpected contrasts of flavour, temperature and texture. Nothing is what it seems. The idea is to provoke, surprise and delight the diner.”

These concepts are reminiscent of the scene in the restaurant.

Extreme plastic surgery:

Despite the prevalence of beautiful plus size models, and movements to boost self-esteem, many women and young girls are preoccupied with negative feelings about their body image. Moreover, with the onslaught of reality programs documenting plastic surgeries, some people rely on a knife to achieve their ideal appearance.

In my oppinion the mother of Sam Lowry is addicted to plastic surgery, too. Today it becomes more and more normal to be operated.

In the world of celebrities it is very important to be good looking.
Some examples of extreme operated celebrities are Michael Jackson and Jocelyn Wildenstein.

ID Scanning is very common these days. Card Scanning Solutions is the market’s leading provider of OCR data collection systems. International service, fast support and delivery are the criteria.

Since 2006 eye scanning technology has been introduced at Britain’s airport terminals as well. The Iris Recognition Immigration System (IRIS) will enable UK citizens and foreigners to skip passport checks.

robotic surveillance:

A group of japanese engineers has developed a system for a surveillance environment.

The Abstract of the system:

“We developed a network robot system integrating various types of robots via ubiquitous networks that introduce an interactive robot into areas in which people are located. In this paper, we present a human behavior recognition method necessary for providing guidance in a public space, which uses a tangible network robot system composed of a mobile robot and vision sensors embedded in an environment. We define some basic features that a person typically exhibits when in need of guidance. Various human behaviors were successfully interpreted by first recognizing the basic features and then forming their different combinations.”

molecular cuisine:

“Ein kleines Gerät druckt molekulare Gerichte in Würfelform aus”

Brand new technology. In the movie you can see the waitress serving the dishes with the food that looks like pet-food. Why not printing your molecular cuisine. It could have any shape you wish and is only one push away…

“The Ministry of information”

One of the central places in the movie is the “Ministry of information” where Sam Lowry work for. The Model for the M.O.I took Terry Gilliam from the real Ministry of Information in Great Britain which was responsible for publicity and propaganda in the Second World War. What interesting is, The M.O.I had at this time also the BBC under control where George Orwell worked for and he took the M.O.I also as a model for his “Ministry of Truth” in the novel 1984.

Here is some information and links about it:

You can’t hide!

There are cameras on the streets, in the shopping center and in the schools. A machine reads the fingerprints of the kids and after that, they get their dinner. Other people celebrate in clubs and pay with a computerchip that is implanted in their arms. I think this is too much. I don’t want to buy something if I have to show my fingerprint or my eye, because of the fear that somebody who needs money, could cut it off.

cloning:

megalopolis – megacities
1985 when the movie was being filmed the number of megacities was only 9. today they are already 25 of these huge cities and some of them even exceed a population of 20 million.
